Three days is the sweet spot for a first visit: one museum day, one canal-and-neighbourhood day, and one day split between Noord and a short trip out of the city. Book the museum slots and the Anne Frank House first, then build the rest around them.
Day 1
Museums & Vondelpark
Morning
Rijksmuseum at opening: the Gallery of Honour first.
Afternoon
Van Gogh Museum (timed slot), then relax in Vondelpark.
Evening
Dinner in De Pijp, close to the Albert Cuyp Market.
Tip: Book both museum slots before you travel.
Day 2
Canals, Jordaan & Anne Frank
Morning
Wander the Jordaan and the Nine Streets. On a Saturday, go to the Noordermarkt.
Afternoon
Anne Frank House (your booked slot), then the Begijnhof and the Spui.
Evening
A small-boat canal cruise at dusk.
Tip: Tickets for the Anne Frank House are released on Tuesdays at 10:00 for about six weeks ahead. Set a reminder.
Day 3
Noord & windmills
Morning
Take the train to Zaanse Schans and arrive early, before the tour buses.
Afternoon
Free ferry to Noord: the A’DAM Tower, the Eye Film Museum and NDSM Wharf.
Evening
Sunset from the A’DAM Lookout, or rent a bike for a final evening ride along the canals.
Tip: Prefer the city? Swap Zaanse Schans for the Rembrandt House and a bike tour.

Frequently asked questions
Is 3 days enough for Amsterdam?
3 days covers the big highlights at a comfortable pace if you group sights by area, as in this plan. Add a day if you want a day trip or more museum time.
What should I book in advance?
Anything with timed entry: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Albert Cuyp Market, Wander the Jordaan & Nine Streets. Check the official sites for current prices and release dates.
Can I change the order of the days?
Yes. Each day is built around one area, so you can swap whole days around, for example to put an indoor museum day on a rainy day.
