eSIM for City Breaks: Do You Need One, and Which?
Heads-up: this page contains affiliate links. If you book or buy through them we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It never changes our picks. How we make money.
An eSIM is a data plan you download to your phone instead of a physical SIM card. You buy it before you leave, install it at home over wifi, and switch it on when you land. No SIM shop, no hunting for wifi to load your map.
Do you actually need one?
- EU phone plan, EU destination: usually not. Under the EU's “roam like at home” rules you can use your normal bundle in other EU countries (check your provider's fair-use limit).
- UK, US or anywhere outside the EU: often yes. Roaming outside the EU can be expensive, and some providers charge for the UK since Brexit.
- Non-EU phone plan visiting Europe: an eSIM is usually much cheaper than roaming.
Before you buy: your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked (not tied to one network). Check it in your phone settings or with your provider.
How to set it up
- Buy a plan for the right country (or a Europe plan if you visit more than one country).
- Install it at home on wifi. Leave it switched off.
- On arrival: turn the eSIM on for mobile data and turn data roaming on for that eSIM only.
- Keep your normal SIM on for calls and texts, or switch it off to avoid roaming charges.
eSIM plans per destination
Airalo and Saily both sell country and Europe-wide plans. Compare data, validity and price on both before you buy.
