Both are classic half-day trips from Amsterdam, both look like a Dutch postcard and both can be busy. But they’re very different experiences.

Zaanse Schans: windmills and crafts

Zaanse Schans is a collection of historic windmills, warehouses and houses, moved here to preserve them. It’s not a “real” village in that sense, but the windmills really work: some grind spices or make oil and paint pigment. You can go inside some of them for a fee. Add the Zaans Museum and the clog and cheese workshops. Tip: arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00 to avoid the tour buses.

Volendam & Marken: harbour and boats

Volendam is a lively fishing town on the former Zuiderzee, with a dyke promenade full of fish stalls (try kibbeling or smoked eel) and traditional costume photo studios. From the harbour, a seasonal boat takes you to Marken, a former island with green wooden houses and a little lighthouse. It’s much quieter, and our favourite half of the trip. Add Edam nearby for the cheese.

Tour or on your own?

On your own is cheaper and more flexible, and Zaanse Schans in particular is easy by train. A tour makes sense if you want to do Zaanse Schans and Volendam/Marken in one day without the connections. Read the reviews and check how much free time you get at each stop.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do Zaanse Schans and Volendam in one day?

Yes. Many tours combine Zaanse Schans, Volendam, Marken and sometimes Edam in one day. On your own it's possible too, but you'll travel back through Amsterdam or need a car, so a combined tour is often easier.

Is Zaanse Schans free?

Walking around the village is free. Some windmills, museums and workshops charge entry, and there's a fee for parking. Check current prices on the official Zaanse Schans website.

How do I get to Volendam from Amsterdam?

By bus from Amsterdam Centraal (the bus station behind the station, north side), about 30 minutes. From Volendam, a seasonal boat sails to Marken.

Which one is better for kids?

Zaanse Schans: windmills you can climb (some), clog-making and cheese demonstrations, plus lots of space to walk around. Volendam is more about the harbour, fish and the view.
