This route groups sights by area so you spend your time walking, not crossing the city. Each day has one booked anchor (a ferry, a deck or a show) and lots of free wandering. Swap days around to fit the weather and your booked time slots.

Day 1

Lower Manhattan & Brooklyn

  1. Morning

Take the first Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island ferry from Battery Park (book ahead).

  2. Afternoon

Visit the 9/11 Memorial pools and the Oculus, then walk the Brooklyn Bridge to DUMBO.

  3. Evening

Have pizza in DUMBO and watch the sunset from Brooklyn Bridge Park, then take the subway back from York St or High St.

Tip: Short on time? Swap the Liberty ferry for the free Staten Island Ferry at sunset.

MoMA, then your observation deck slot about 45 minutes before sunset.

  3. Evening

A Broadway show, then Times Square lit up afterwards.

Tip: Book the deck for a sunset slot only on a clear day. Check the forecast and the ticket’s change policy.

  1. Morning

  2. Afternoon

The Met (or the Natural History Museum if you have kids) – choose 2–3 wings and keep to them.

  3. Evening

Dinner on the Upper West Side, or head down for jazz in the Village.

Tip: Rent a bike for the park loop if you want to see more of it in less time.

Day 4

West side & the Village

  1. Morning

Walk the High Line north from Gansevoort St, with a detour to Little Island.

  2. Afternoon

Lunch at Chelsea Market, then wander Greenwich Village and Washington Square Park and on to SoHo.

  3. Evening

A late jazz or comedy set in the Village to finish your trip.

Tip: Flying out from JFK? Leave plenty of time: the AirTrain + LIRR combo is usually faster than a taxi at rush hour.

Frequently asked questions

Is 4 days enough for New York?

4 days covers the big highlights at a comfortable pace if you group sights by area, as in this plan. Add a day if you want a day trip or more museum time.

What should I book in advance?

Anything with timed entry: Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island, 9/11 Memorial & Museum, Walk the Brooklyn Bridge, DUMBO & Brooklyn Bridge Park. Check the official sites for current prices and release dates.

Can I change the order of the days?

Yes. Each day is built around one area, so you can swap whole days around, for example to put an indoor museum day on a rainy day.
